The Selma Quarterback Club

Our Purpose

The object of the Selma Quarterback Club shall be to promote fellowship through football, stress the spirit of the game and the lessons it teaches, as well as adding to members’ football knowledge all while providing scholarship opportunities to deserving young men in our community.

The Club presently awards four $4000 scholarships annually to three young men selected by a committee of Club members appointed by the Club Captain.  The applicant must have played high school football, but being a starter or a seldom-used player does not matter.  Selection is based on the following factors: academics and grade-point average, participation in other school and community activities, and financial need.

The scholarships each honor a member or former member of the Club who has made significant contributions to the Club.

  • J. Harmon Carter, a former Club Captain and an active Club member for almost 50 years, was among a small group that guided the Club for many years.  He was responsible for initially funding the Scholarship Foundation, which is named in his honor.
  • "Big" Fred Davis, II, a former Club Captain and an active Club member for over 40 years was responsible, through his football connections as a former player at the University of Alabama and the Washington Redskins, for many speakers coming to the Club throughout the early years.
  • Larry D. Striplin, Jr., a former Club Captain and an active Club member for more than 20 years, has served as Program Chairman or has assisted the Program Chairman for most of his term of membership.  Many of the Club's speakers over the past 20 years are the result of Striplin's involvement in sports and his relationships as Chairman of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
  • W. Forrest Hatfield was Club Quarterback and Scholarship Administrator for the past 32 years.  An active member for over 40 years, he has worked closely with the Club Captains, been involved in annual membership programs, selected and invited speakers, and participated in the scholarship selection process.

The Club's goal is to continue to build the Foundation's assets, and as income permits, fund additional scholarships.
